Persimmon Pleasures grew out of our company Seeds and Such, Inc.  Seeds and Such started as a family hobby, buying black walnuts and tree seeds.  This is a new endeavor to celebrate our community’s love of persimmons and our holiday food traditions.  Persimmons are a native fruit, growing on tall trees in the wild.  There are few farms or plantations of the native American common persimmon.  The fruit is much smaller than Asian persimmons, with a sweet rich flavor.  The favorite dessert is persimmon pudding.   The most common recipes result in a very moist pudding, thicker than a Jello® pudding, but softer than a brownie.  Many families in Southern Indiana serve this dessert at Thanksgiving, Christmas, and family parties.  A festival in Mitchell, Indiana was established in honor of the local wild fruit.

The fruit, once ripe, is not as acidic as many other fruits.  The Indiana Department of Health requires a license before anyone can sell persimmon pulp in Indiana.  It must be prepared in a commercial kitchen that is inspected by the Indiana Health department.   We prepare the pulp in our licensed commercial kitchen.   We take food safety very seriously and are trained food handlers.

We seek your advice for product suggestions and improvements.  Thank you for visiting this web site and  any comments you share with us.  Please address your comments to charlotte@persimmonpleasures.com.

Why does it cost so much to ship pulp?

Our pulp must arrive under 41° F at its destination, regardless of what season it is or what climate our client lives in. The pulp is sent by UPS Two-Day Shipping so that transit time is kept to a minimum.  As shipping destinations get farther away from Southern Indiana, shipping costs increase. Packaging materials themselves include insulated boxes, reusable freezer packs, and dry ice when necessary.  We believe that high shipping costs are a small price compared to food safety.

What do you do with persimmon pulp?

Lots of recipes can be made with persimmon pulp!  The regional favorite here in Southern Indiana is Persimmon Pudding (see a recipe on our Home page).  Desserts are the most popular, with pulp being used in cookies, pies, and breads.  However, barbeque sauces and other savory dishes are delicious with persimmon pulp, too.  We sell two persimmon cookbooks on our Products page if you are looking for some inspiration.

Would you like to be on our mailing list?  This list will not be shared with any other companies.  It will allow you to have advance notice of  products, announcements, and sales.  Click the box to add your email address to our persimmon list. Persimmon List

Do you have persimmon pulp year-round?

Yes.

Where can I see you?

You can see us at our main office in Bedford, Indiana.  We’re there year-round, although our hours change by the season.  If you’d like to stop by, please call ahead at 888-321-9445.  We are also likely to have a booth at Mitchell’s Persimmon Festival in September, the Indiana Artisan Market in April, and Kentucky Crafted: The Market in March.  Call us for details!

Are these persimmons the same as the ones I see in the grocery store?

No.  Asian persimmons are the most common type found in grocery stores.  Fuyu and Hitachi are popular varieties and larger in size than a golf ball.  The North American persimmon found in our products generally has a sweeter, stronger flavor and are smaller in size than golf balls.
